Anderston
Green Spaces

Anderston Green Spaces is a community-led voluntary group that formed in November 2021 in response to the acute lack of access to green space and private gardens experienced by many local residents, a need brought into sharp focus during lockdown.

The group emerged directly from local community action, driven by residents’ desire for healthier, more welcoming outdoor spaces. By reclaiming a previously underused pocket of land, Anderston Green Spaces has transformed it into an accessible community orchard/green space where people can relax, connect with nature, and spend time outdoors in a dense urban environment.

The space offers a much-needed respite from surrounding concrete and traffic, supporting mental wellbeing and social connection. Fruit trees, herbs, and soft fruits grown on site are freely available to the community, encouraging shared ownership, food growing skills, and inclusive access to local resources.

The project has helped foster pride, connection, and a stronger sense of place for people living in the area.

The other day I was feeling down. I’d gone out to the shop, and on my way back, I sat here - on one of the benches - and I just sat here for a little while, and looked at the flowers and all the bees, and it made me feel better.
