Who we are

Plant Up CIC was officially formed in February 2025 by Kate Drummond and Mary Redmond, both established artists and gardeners with strong community development skills and a shared commitment to, and experience of, creating open-access equitable biodiverse green spaces.

Kate Drummond

Kate works with design, people and nature in community settings. She is an experienced practitioner in place-based design and creative community development, with a strong track
record of delivering inclusive, imaginative, and meaningful work in the public realm across the UK.

In 2025 Kate undertook a Masters Architectural Studies at Glasgow School of Art - passing with distinction, and winning both the GSA Sustainability Prize and The Chairs Medal for the Mackintosh School of Architecture.

  • Public green space should be open, generous and free to access.

  • Communities deserve a say in how surroundings are shaped.

  • Climate-resilient design should be practical, creative and joyful.

  • Doing the work matters as much as talking about it.

Care Not Capital

In 2025, Mary & Kate were the only Scottish participants selected for the inaugural cohort of John Little & Susannah Grant’s Care Not Capital ‘Modern Gardener’ training; a pioneering programme in sustainable public horticulture focusing on specialist skills in climate-resilient planting, habitat creation, SuDS/rain garden design, and ecological approaches to post-industrial landscape design.

Care Not Capital was developed in response to a persistent imbalance in urban development, where significant investment is directed towards the design and construction of green infrastructure, but little is reserved for the long-term care of these spaces or the people who maintain them.

Care Not Capital proposes a bottom-up, care-led model of green space management, challenging conventional top-down approaches that prioritise fabrication, materials and ‘things’ over ongoing care, stewardship - and people.
