Sauchiehall Street Planter

In response to public consultations requesting more greenery on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow Life's Sauchiehall Street Culture & Heritage District programme  commissioned us to create a temporary planter.

The planter walls are created using gabions - filled by building handmade drystone walls using recycled demolition and construction 'waste' materials from buildings on the street and the recent street groundworks. Using these materials saves waste from landfill, incurs no costs other than transportation, but most importantly links the new structure to the heritage and materiality of the street itself.

Community members from FROGGS (Friends of Garnethill Green Spaces) helped us to plant up the beds with perennial planters that will - hopefully - bring some bees to the street!

Finally! Something locally conceived and designed in the urban realm in Glasgow!! So much more interesting to look at already than those giant white Italian planters!

In response to public consultation asking for more greening of the street, the Sauchiehall Street Culture and Heritage District has commissioned gardeners and artists, Plant Up CIC, to create a planter using surplus building materials from building sites on Sauchiehall Street. This approach reuses materials which would have otherwise ended up in landfill and repurposes them to make something beautiful.

It also keeps the historical materials of the street and Glasgow, on the street.

We'd love to hear your feedback on the planter to help inform future commissions.
